Teaching About Farming

by Alexis Brua

For National FFA Week, the Laurel FFA Chapter officers took a trip down to the elementary school to teach the fifth and sixth graders about agriculture in our home state of Pennsylvania. We started off by explaining what agriculture was, and how they use it every single day of their lives. Along with the lesson, we had an activity for them, and we called it, “What’s in the Box?” They would reach their hand into the box, feel something agricultural related, and try to guess! After they guessed correctly, we would educate them about it. These students felt anything from straw, a stuffed animal, to even mushrooms and pine needles. Once the initial presentation was finished, we then talked about the FFA, from what it was and how to join. It was a great day educating the youth about agriculture and potentially inspiring future farmers!
