A Prediction System

by Lillyana Knox

I bet you’re about to learn something you didn’t new. I’ll give you a hint, I just predicted something. Would you believe me if I told you that the human brain predicts more than it processes? Neuroscientists have described this phenomenon as Predictive Processing, a viewing of the brain as a prediction engine as opposed to a passive receiver of all the things thrown at it at every millisecond.

The brain heavily relies on this system for a few reasons. One being that it is a cause for metabolic efficiency which is the concept that thinking and processing requires a colossal amount of energy but by our brains using its predictive process when reacting to everyday events or situations, it allows the human brain to react to information as though it's already been processed all whilst saving massive amounts of energy.

Another reason for our brains utilizing its predictive process is evolutionary survival which is that organisms that have historically been able to precisely predict danger have a much higher and effective chance of survival. As you can see, our brains may not always be processing but it sure is always at work.
