Girls BBall Recap 1/2

by Breah Dewberry

The Lady Spartan Basketball team played the Mohawk Warriors on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Although their 2024 did not start off with a win, the Spartans played a tough, exciting game.

Throughout the entire contest, Laurel stuck with the Lady Warriors. With one minute remaining in the first quarter, the game was tied at six. It didn't take long for Mohawk to gain four more points. There were exactly 3.2 seconds left on the clock when junior Shyan Tindall passed the ball to freshman Alexis Krol, who dribbled in for the layup, making it 10-8, Mohawk. Things got even more exciting during the second eight minutes when Macey Cwynar helped her team take the lead with a three-pointer, making the score 19-18. This led the score to become 23-18, in favor of the Spartans at halftime.

In the third quarter of the game, the Mohawk girls came back with fourteen points while Laurel only gained eight. The score was then 32-31, Mohawk. However, our Lady Spartans never gave up a fight. The Spartans had gotten the lead back multiple times, but when the clock read that there were six minutes left in the game, they struggled to follow through. The final score was 44-38.

Even though this game didn’t turn out how they had hoped, Morgan Barker, Macey Cwynar, Shyan Tindal, Jael Henderson, Maya Jarrett, and Alexis Krol all contributed to their teams score; meaning almost every lady in white and green that played scored at least one point. We asked sophomore Maya Jarrett what she thought of the game. Her response was optimistic, “We definitely should’ve won that game but I’m proud of our team. If we ever get a chance to face them again I believe that game would have a different outcome.” The future is bright girls!
