Wrestling Post Season

The Laurel varsity wrestling team has had a very productive year—one for the history books. In regular-season team play, they posted a 17–6 record and won back-to-back section championships. They then entered the WPIAL playoffs, where a victory over Freedom advanced them to the next round. In the quarterfinals, they faced Jefferson-Morgan. After this crucial win, they advanced to the semifinals, where they lost by three points to McGuffey, a ranked team in the state.
In the consolation match, they lost to Burrell, finishing fourth in the WPIAL out of more than 40 teams. The Laurel Spartans advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in the program’s history. There, after a hard-fought battle against Mifflinburg, they suffered a loss that ended their season.
Last week, on February 7th, the individual section tournament took place. The top six wrestlers qualified for the WPIAL tournament, which is set to take place on February 20th and 21st. Laurel will have 11 of its 12 wrestlers competing.
